Segregation due to nature or nurture?

permalink comments (2) forum (2) email thisIt is well accepted that women should hold certain job positions because as, it is believed, they possess such personal characteristics that consist them capable for holding only specific jobs.
Are we born with those characteristics, such as sensitivity and tideness, or do we learn to behave in certain ways that shape our lives even our dreams that eventually, entraps us in certain posts?

1 Segragation at work
Dear Vasiliki, Segregation at work can be found in every workplace. I work as a secretary for more than 15 years and my colleaques that hold similar or thesame positions as I do, are all women. The truth is that, I have never dreamed of becoming a secretary. It is my parents that forced me to follow such a career path by saying to me that that's a proper job for women. I hope that things have changed today. Many thanks DimDim Kindley, 04-May-2007 16:39:18

2 Gender Stereotyping
Dear Dim, Thank you for commenting and presenting us with valuable information on how you chose to become a secretary. From what you have described, one could conclude that women as well as men are not made to follow certain career paths but are, somehow, forced to through socialisation. This is well demonstated on research carried out on socialisation. Social construction shapes our beliefs about our strengths and weaknesses in all sectors of life, including our career choices. This is done through gender stereotyping where we learn what is aproppriate for one's gender. Unfortunately, after 30 years of equal opportunities on education and training, research shows that young people still follow traditional gender stereotyped career choices. The pupil's job preferences remain along traditional lines.Boys don't feel that are suited in female occupations and vice versa. That is the reason why segregation at work still persists in our society. However, this doesn't mean that the changes that have been made are overlooked.
